I have worked in education for almost twenty years. Part of that time as a secondary school teacher, and the other as director of Eureka, an English language service provider. I have seen thousands of Hong Kong students reap the benefits of learning a second language. Cantonese may be the language of the heart for Hong Kong but English is the language of the world.
I am reminded of a quote by Margaret Mead when I think about Eureka -Â
"Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has."
This is the spirit of Eureka. Our people are our strength. Every Eureka person is imbued with this idea and understands that what happens in the classroom is the cumulative effort of staff, writers, managers, and teachers. Our team is united in this understanding of the power of language and education, and the profound impact it can have on a person’s life.
I am a proud Hong Konger. I was educated in this city, and started out my career as a physics teacher. I embody Eureka's values. I learn every day from conversations with clients, partners as well as my teachers and managers. I continue to be a student of languages, and will be studying them until my last days, and my life is richer for it. Â
We are proud of the work we have done over the years. It is challenging, and at times difficult, but all things worth doing well require a rolling up of the sleeves, and a little sweat. We are in the business of language education, but we are also in the business of creating global citizens, and building of a person. And in turn, citizens or people create cities, and states and nations. Eureka hopes to continue to provide incalculable small moments of learning and discovery to our students, teachers, and staff. I hope to help provide a little hope and light into this world. We are all in this together.
Yours sincerely, Â
