International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
The IELTS exam is a widely recognised and popular exam, testing the English language proficiency of candidates, with over 2 million people sitting the exam each year from all over the world.
For candidates, it can open up the world of opportunities for them, as it can help them provide the platform to study, live, work in Hong Kong and abroad. IELTS is accepted internationally by over 9,000 organisations including academic institutions, government sectors, professional/industry bodies and companies/employers.
There are 2 formats to choose from depending on your needs:
(1) IELTS Academic – for those that intend to study to undergraduate or postgraduate level or for a professional recognition. Â
(2) IELTS General Training – for those that wish to study below undergraduate level and those who wish to immigrate to an English-speaking country such as UK or Australia.
Each test lasts for around 2 hours and 45 minutes covering the following components:
Listening: 30 minutes (plus 10 minutes transfer time)
Reading: 1 hour
Writing: 1 hour
Speaking: 11-14 minutes
There is no pass or fail for the test, instead the exam is graded between band 1-9 for each component and an average is then taken between the 4 components to produce the overall score. Bands 1-3 (Non-user to Extremely limited user) are for those that have no English ability except for a few words to those that can only understand simple English sentences and vocabulary in familiar situations.
