Before the lesson:

  1. Teacher should ensure that clear classroom rules and procedures printed out.
  2. Teacher should have a suitable reward system
  3. Teacher should be able to identify the difficult parts in the lesson content in order to easily deliver and transition from them.
  4. Teacher should have all lesson materials and tools ready and best suits the lesson objective.
  5. Teacher will have to prepare a backup plan.

During the lesson:

  1. Teacher should start the lesson with a cheerful attitude, to boost students motivation to learn.
  2. Teacher will have to go through all classroom rules and procedures with the students, to make sure all students clearly understand and are able to see them throughout the lesson.
  3. Teacher must set students expectations on the disciplinary measures and the reward system.
  4. Teacher should have a lesson agenda or a checklist visibly displayed for students, to easily transition between tasks.
  5. Teacher should manage the learning process and the learning environment enthusiastically.
  6. Teacher should be inclusive using materials, pictures, language, music, posters, magazines, and other sources, to ensure that no student is left out.
  7. Teacher must be very attentive to students behaviour.
  8. Teacher should move around the entire room throughout the lesson when appropriate.
  9. Teacher should reinforce positive behaviour to motivate students.
  10. Teacher can allow students to take responsibility.

Disciplinary Measures

Discipline is important to maintain order and harmony in the classroom.

  • Teacher has to intervene promptly when to discourage inappropriate behaviour, eg. verbal warning or suggesting to correct student’s behaviour
  • Follow-up support
  • Reasonable / logical consequences ex. If a student failed to hand in his/her homework on time, he/she should be made to finish their homework after lesson or after school, rather than giving them a detention.
  • Teacher should avoid student humiliation instead teacher should guide student to feel responsible rather than shameful or ridiculous.
  • Fairness: Teacher should be fair to all students and give student the chance to explain the reasons behind his/her actions.
  • Firmness: Teacher and students have to act upon and follow the actions and discipline agreement made. Teacher must be serious and consistent about the implementation of the rules.
  • Discipline should be applied to focus on the rules not on the teachers powers.
  • Discipline should be followed by guidance
